Weekly Photography Assignment: Nighttime

Each week we’ll be giving you a theme that you can submit a photo for, and we’ll choose our favourite to be featured on the Nature TTL website. Participating in these assignments will be a great way for you to encourage yourself to push the boundaries of your photography and improve together as a community on the website.

Week 216: Nighttime

Our theme this week is Nighttime, and we’d love to see what creative images you can take of nature at night.  It can be daunting to photograph nature at night, but we challenge you to head out as darkness descends, even if it’s only into your garden, to see what creative images you can come up. Certain aspects of nature are active only at this time; what will you see? Perhaps you will turn your camera skyward, and try long exposure techniques to capture the stars. You might have a go a light painting, and use a torch or even just your phone light to light up a plant or insect. Whether you’re a seasoned nature photographer, or are new to the genre, the options for awesome nighttime nature photos are endless, and we can’t wait to see what inspiring images you can create.

Last week’s winner

Last week’s theme was Mood and Atmosphere – and our favourite image this week is:

This week’s winner is this image, captured by B B: “A flock of geese suddenly appeared in my frame, only allowing for shutter speed adjustment. The image turned out a bit dark, so I decided to make it a black&white. Even so, I still like the silhouette of the geese flying over the trees.” We love the sense of mood and admosphere captured in this image. The use of black and white is evocative, and highlights the graduated tonal qualities of the woodlands. The focus on the flock of birds adds poignancy to the scene, and draws our eye up and into the negative speace, creating an engaging and complex composition. Well done, and thank you to all who entered!
