Weekly Photography Assignment: Bokeh
Each week we’ll be giving you a theme that you can submit a photo for, and we’ll choose our two favourites to be featured on the Nature TTL website. Participating in these assignments will be a great way for you to force yourself to push the boundaries of your photography and improve together as a community on the website.
Week 3: Bokeh
Our theme this week is Bokeh. What’s a bokeh? Here’s the definition:
“The visual quality of the out-of-focus areas of a photographic image.”
It’s usually how you describe the nice, soft out of focus areas of your photo that are signatory of wildlife images taken with telephotos. With some creativity, these areas can be made to be particularly attractive. For some guidance, have a read of the following tutorials:

Last Week’s Favourites
Here are our favourites from last week’s theme — Natural Details! View all the entries on our post.
This image by Will Snow really shows all sorts of natural details. The dew drops covering the spider’s web are crisp and glinting with all sorts of natural light. The whole image is set off nicely by the central droplet which appears to be reflecting some leaves. The use of a shallow depth of field brings some areas into focus, whilst throwing the rest out, to give a very 3D feel to the photo.
I love the contrasting areas of this image. The two leaves compliment each other greatly, and the black and white has been used to highlight the important areas: the leaves’ veins. Some great post production work combined with good natural lighting.
