New EOS R5 Mirrorless Camera: 45MP, 20fps, 8K Video

Today, Canon has unveiled the much-anticipated Canon EOS R5 mirrorless camera. The announcement came during an online product launch watched live by thousands.

Canon’s new flagship mirrorless camera is aimed at professionals looking to combine both stills and video work in one camera body. It is said to be the mirrorless successor to Canon’s popular 5D series of cameras.

The announcement comes alongside that of the EOS R6 and three new telephoto lenses for the RF system: the 100-500mm, 600mm f/11, and 800mm f/11 lenses.

The Canon EOS R6 boasts a shooting speed of up to 20 frames per second (using an electronic shutter) and is being touted as a camera particularly of interest to action and wildlife photographers. Using a mechanical shutter, the camera will achieve 12fps.

The deep learning autofocus, with subject recognition, is bolstered by 5,940 selectable AF areas that allow for complete frame coverage and speeds of just 0.05 seconds to achieving focus.

Whilst the EOS R5 rattles off stills frames at 45 megapixels, the video capabilities are causing a lot of stir in the film industry.

Capable of shooting 8K raw video at 12-bit, the camera will establish a unique corner of the market. It is a compact, lightweight video camera capable of shooting in extreme circumstances thanks to its weather sealing (said to match that of the 5D Mark IV).

4K video is available at up to 120 frames per second, uncropped, for those not looking to shoot at the data-heavy 8K resolution. Oversampled 4K is possible up to 30p.

There are also 8-stops of in-body camera stabilisation, making shooting on the fly a lot easier. This is possible because of the RF mount, which is so wide that the sensor can “move around” more than usual and avoid “cutting off the edges” of the image.

The camera has a 5.76M-dot OLED EVF with a 120fps max refresh rate. The LCD is 3.2″ and 2.1M-dot, and is fully articulating for maximum flexibility in situ.

There is 1 CFExpress card slot, and 1 UHS-II SD slot.

For more information, check out the Canon website. The EOS R5 will be available at the end of July for $3899 USD body-only, or $4999 alongside the RF 24-105m f/4L lens. It is available for pre-order now.
