Weekly Photography Assignment: Birds in Flight

Each week we’ll be giving you a theme that you can submit a photo for, and we’ll choose our favourite to be featured on the Nature TTL website. Participating in these assignments will be a great way for you to encourage yourself to push the boundaries of your photography and improve together as a community on the website.

Week 219: Birds in Flight

Our theme this week is Birds in Flight, and we’d love to see what creative images you can take of birds on the wing.  Birds are a wonderful subject to practice your nature photography on. They can be seen pretty much everywhere, and at any time of the year! This week, try to focus on capturing images of them in flight. In can be challenging, but it creates great oppertunities for interesting images. You may end up with a silhouette, or use tracking or slow shutter speeds to generate a sense of movement in your images. You may want to focus on birds in your backyard, especially if you have a birdfeeder, or travel further afield to see some action on the wing. Whether you’re a seasoned nature photographer, or are new to the genre, the options for awesome photos of birds in flight are endless, and we can’t wait to see what inspiring images you can create.

Last week’s winner

Last week’s theme was Movement – and our favourite image this week is:

This week’s winner is this image, captured by Tim J Nicol: “A Ruby-throated Hummingbird in Bunnell, Florida. Taken with a Nikon D850 and a Tamron 150-600 mm len. We love the motion blur captured in the wings of the hummingbird in this image. It is a beautiful expression of movement. The black and white edit adds a lovely fine art feel to the shot, and allows us to focus on our sole subject. Well done, and thank you to all who entered!
