Weekly Photography Assignment: Backlighting
Each week we’ll be giving you a theme that you can submit a photo for, and we’ll choose our favourite to be featured on the Nature TTL website. Participating in these assignments will be a great way for you to force yourself to push the boundaries of your photography and improve together as a community on the website.
Week 154: Backlighting
Our theme this week is Backlighting and we’d love to see what images you can create playing with light to backlight your subjects! This is where the light comes from behind the subject and straight towards the camera. It allows for beautiful rim-lighting around the subject, or for light to come through the back of translucent things like leaves. Will you use a macro lens to photograph an insect or plant in front of the light? Or capture the silhouette of an animal against the last light of the day? Perhaps you will shoot the outline of a tree or forest against the rising sun? The options are endless, and we can’t wait to see what photos you can take using the backlighting technique.

Last week’s winner
Last week’s theme was Signs of Winter – and our favourite image this week is:
This week’s winner is by Roger Gough: ‘This photo was taken at a nature reserve near Derby. I was pleased to spot that the small flowerheads appeared to have made their own snowballs. I thought that the soft background gave the subject a sense of place.’ We love the dramatic wintery skies of this image, and the way the unique, snowy subject is directly in the foreground, commanding our attention. Well done Roger!
