Weekly Photography Assignment: Rule of Thirds

Each week we’ll be giving you a theme that you can submit a photo for, and we’ll choose our favourite to be featured on the Nature TTL website. Participating in these assignments will be a great way for you to encourage yourself to push the boundaries of your photography and improve together as a community on the website.

Week 162: Rule of Thirds

Our theme this week is Rule of Thirds and we’d love to see what creative shots of nature you can take using this composition guideline!

Here’s the definition to help you get started:

“An image should be imagined as divided into nine equal parts by two equally spaced horizontal lines and two equally spaced vertical lines, and that important compositional elements should be placed along these lines or their intersections. Proponents of the technique claim that aligning a subject with these points creates more tension, energy and interest in the composition than simply centering the subject.”

Perhaps you will compose your shot so that the subject of interest is on the left or right third of the image? Or maybe you will find find and photograph three dividing layers in a landscape scene that break up the framing evenly? The options are endless, and we can’t wait to see what inspiring images of nature you can create using the rule of thirds!

Last week’s winner

Last week’s theme was Action Shots – and our favourite image this week is:

This week’s winner is this image, captured by Aruna Thilakarathne, who ‘came across this encounter last week at Wilpatty National Park, Sri Lanka, while searching for leopards.’ We love the composition of this image. The creative choice to freeze the moment with a fast shutter speed whilst capturing the light on the outstretched wings of the peacock in flight is highly effective and visually engaging. Well done, and thank you to all who entered!
