A ground-level hide set on the edge of a pine forest with opportunities for squirrels feeding, running, jumping and climbing trees.
Red squirrels are a classic wildlife photography subject and no trip to the Scottish Highlands would be complete without capturing a few images of our cute native reds. Squirrel activity varies each day but on an average session you might have 2-4 squirrels visiting over a period of 3-5 hours. We put out food for the squirrels every morning so they are used to visiting the feeding sites and they are used to the sounds of cameras.
The squirrels are most active in the morning and often their activity will diminish after around 1pm, making this a perfect session to combine with an afternoon of crested tit photography. Individual squirrels behave differently – some are very confident and will spend extended periods feeding in front of the hide; others are on a ‘smash and grab’ mission and will run off with the food to cache it. There are a variety of areas the squirrels will visit and from this hide you can photograph them feeding, jumping, climbing trees and on attractive, natural perches above the heather.
