Join the BearPhoto team throughout the unique Scandinavian seasons to experience and photograph some of Europe’s most impressive predators. From the fairytale-like winter landscapes, endless midsummer light to the bittersweet colours of Autumn, BearPhoto is a specialist in providing unforgettable photo experience to the wilds of the Finnish Boreal.

Join the BearPhoto team on an incredible brown bear photography hide workshop in Finland. We will head into the domain of Europe’s greatest apex predators, including the brown bear, wolverine and wolf. Bear photography in Finland is an experience you will never forget. As specialists in the field of bear observation and photography, we run an extensive programme of tours to suit everyone’s needs. Brown bears can be photographed from the first bears of the season amongst snow-blanketed landscapes, through to the last bears in the midst of September’s rich autumnal colours.

Our first trips of the season take place in the spring. As winter slowly loosens its grip, the giants of the forest are emerging from their winter hibernation, and are determined to feed amongst the snow-blanketed landscape. We perfectly time this trip with the emergence of the very first bears, with the larger males being the first to appear from their slumbers. With a mosaic of brown tones to their fur, contrasted against the fairytale-like snowy landscapes, dedicated photographers can be rewarded with excellent photographic potential. Participants can expect a number of bird species to be present in the area, including black and great-spotted woodpecker, bullfinch, and many more. Red squirrels also frequent the observation hide close to the daytime accommodation.

The next of our seasonal trips take place in mid-summer, which is a truly magical time to spend in northern Scandinavia. With 24 hours of daylight, participants can expect extended unique photographic opportunities in what is peak brown bear season. With magical light and crisp green vegetation across the boreal forest regions, bear activity is high during this time of year; beautiful summer light allows a range of unique images. Warm days and cool nights bring with them a ghostly mist, which slowly forms above the swamps. It is here where the “ghosts of the forest” appear most at home, as many individual bears are regularly present in the area.

Our final season for photographing brown bears is in autumn. The surrounding landscape is now awash with vibrant colour, decorated in its vivid autumn ensemble. The last bears of the season are preparing for their hibernation, and many individuals may be present. Mid to late autumn is the prime season to observe bear cubs, which venture into the area alongside their mothers in search of food. The bears are in prime condition at this time of year with pristine, thick coats. As autumn progresses and the nights get longer, the magnificent glow of the Aurora Borealis is often visible from the hides. This time of year offers some incredibly unique photographic opportunities, thanks to the gorgeous light and surrounding colours.

All tours are suited to all levels of photographers, from complete beginners to seasoned professionals. Our trips have between 6-10 participants, ensuring that each tour maintains the bespoke feel we pride ourselves on. Furthermore, each tour has two award-winning expert guides, meaning participants can benefit from one-to-one tuition. Optional daytime lectures and workshops make this time not only a truly amazing wildlife experience, but also a valuable learning opportunity too. All tours are based on a full-board basis, including comfy accommodation and ground transport from your chosen airport.

If you can’t find exactly what you’re looking for in our organised tours, let us create your own tailor-made BearPhoto holiday to suit, by customising an existing tour or creating something entirely bespoke. This is particularly suited to the more advanced photographer wishing to take advantage of our location-experts where capturing more difficult photographs is a goal.
